A hawthorn native to the United States, crataegus ouachitensis, is a beautiful small tree. The fruit is palatable and edible, but due to the scarcity of the plant, many specimens do not fruit. It has a low branching structure, with a silvery bark that flakes off to reveal orange underneath. With age, the orange can turn green, to have a rainbow colored bark. The leaves look like cilantro. It appears to commonly be affected by cedar rust. The largest I’ve seen was along the Lakeview Lodge trail.
